How best can we express the Olympic spirit and celebrate the first-ever Youth Olympics Games (YOG) in Singapore in 2010? Faced with this challenge, the 10 ACJC students in the college’s Grassroots Enrichment, Attachment & Training (GREAT) programme designed and constructed a three-dimensional sculpture of the YOG logo.

To encourage the public to appreciate the Olympic values, the students taught the participants of the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Community Sports Festival and Ulu Pandan Youth X’travaganza how to fold coloured paper into the origami shapes of heart, star and fish to respectively depict respect, excellence and friendship. The origami shapes were inserted into the 3 parts of the sculpture, thus forming the YOG logo in its full glory. Members of the public were also encouraged to pen their wishes for Team Singapore on the huge floor mat under the sculpture. Prominent signatories include Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education; Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports; and Mr Christopher de Souza, Member of Parliament for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.
The sculpture was brought to ACJC on 26 July to allow our college community to view the display and leave their wishes on the floor map. As a token of our college’s support for the inaugural YOG in Singapore, the sculpture will be donated to the Singapore YOG Organising Committee for display at future YOG events.
