In 2007, the Geography Society sent in 2 teams to participate, and one of the team won the Commendation Award. This year, the Geography Society has one team in the competition, (the team is named ACSphalt). ACSphalt comprised of 4 members, namely Blias Tan De-Gen from the class of 2AA1, Anil Sebastian Pulickel, Ngai Jia Sheng, and Aditya Sunil Nalkur, all from 2SA1. The competition project that the team has been working on since the end of 2008 to the present, is on the topic of renewal energy which they proposed could be obtain from the roads of Singapore. The idea is to obtain heat absorbed by the roads in Singapore and channel this heat for heating and for electricity generation.

In the Preliminary rounds, the team wrote a 2000-word report entitled, ‘The Prometheus Effect, From Asphalt Heat to Energy’, and presented their project to a panel of judges on the 4 of May 2009. They moved on to the Finals and further refined their project into a 5000-word report, and on 27 May 2009, presented their project to a panel of 11 judges. Team ACSphalt representing ACJC emerged as Champions and received their awards on 30 June 2009. The team has won for themselves a prize of $10 000.00, half of which the team members have kindly donated to the Geography Department of Anglo-Chinese Junior College. As part of their prize award, the team members, together with the team’s mentor-teacher, Mrs Susan Meow, will be visiting a few cities in Germany to showcase their project to a number of educational institutions at the end of July 2009.
The high quality of the project has been commended by the judges, and industry experts are impressed by the novel idea proposed by the project. It is the hope of the team that the project and the attention it has generated will be one small step towards furthering the cause of environmental conservation.
