ACJC Excels at the Toastmasters 'Gavel' Competition 2009

The Tampines Junior College (TPJC) Gavel Competition is an Inter JC/CI Oratorical competition, which is organised annually. The main objective is to promote public speaking.

Altogether, 13 JCs took part and there were a total of 26 participants.
In the preliminary round, each participant had to deliver a 2-minute impromptu speech. He/she was given a 5-minute preparation time and could choose to speak on one of the following topics:

1)    With power comes responsibility
2)    To communicate well, you do not need to speak well.

After the preliminary round, the 10 participants were selected by a panel of distinguished judges, many of whom are accomplished toastmasters, to enter the finals. Both of our representatives – Thng Yiren of 2AH and Thara Gopalan of 1SD1- made it to the finals. We are pleased to announce that our JC was the only one to have both representatives qualifying for the finals.

Finalists of the Gavel Competition: Thara Gopalan and Thng Yiren 4th and 5th from the left respectively.

In the final round, each participant had to again deliver a 2-minute speech. However, the biggest challenge was that he/she was not given any preparation time. Our representatives delivered speeches on the following topics:

Thng Yiren – The customer is right.
Thara Gopalan – Young people are not responsible for their actions.

In the finals, Thng Yiren did the college proud by clinching the second overall position. Our heartiest congratulations to both our representatives!

Thng Yiren receiving his First Runner-Up trophy.
