Team ACJC ranks second in the National Debate Tournament

After months of training and preparing for the prestigious MOE Invitational Debating Championships (MIDC), Team ACJC successfully weathered a tough run en route to the grand finals of this year’s MIDC. ACJC convincingly won three of their four preliminary rounds to enter the elimination rounds.

Team ACJC: (L-R) Lim Yin Li, Vanessa Lim, Anne Tan

One of the notable preliminary matches ACJC endured was the make-or-break third round, where our debaters eliminated the 2008 finalist National Junior College with a unanimous 3-Nil win. Team ACJC would then defeat St. Andrew’s JC in the quarters and advance to the semi-finals against Hwa Chong Institution. HCI was not only the 2008 champion, but also the team which beat ACJC at the same stage of the MIDC last year. This time, our debaters did splendidly, and sent HCI out of the tournament.

The finals in Victoria JC, was against the home team, VJC. It was closely fought, but this would not be our year. Our team did the school proud by coming in first-runner-up in the national tournament, and one of our debaters, Lim Yin Li (2AA2) was ranked one of the top five speakers of the competition. This is the second time ACJC has reached the finals of the MIDC in three years.

Team ACJC would like to thank our principals, teachers-in-charge, our coach Mr Joshua Hiew (former ACJC and national debate captain) for supporting us and lifting us to this result. To God be the glory, the Best Is Yet To Be.

Members of the ACJC Team 2009: Anne Tan and Fernando Loo (2SC1), Lim Yin Li, Vanessa Lim (1AH), Robert William Straughan (1SD2).
