NASA Fundamental Aeronautics Student Competition 2007 – 2008

In this competition, students are asked to think about a revolution in aircraft, a vehicle that could become a next generation DC-3* type of transport vehicle. High school students are invited to write an essay describing how the transportation of goods and passengers might be revolutionized with a revolutionary aircraft design. Over 140 students from 15 nations took part in this competition. A team of NASA engineers from the four aeronautics centres read each entry and the highest average scores were used to rank the entries and determine the winners.

The winning entry for the International Individual Award was a proposal sent in by Aditya Singh, 2SB11. His project, entitled ‘The Dodo: Flying in the Future’, was awarded the highest average scores by the NASA engineers. Comments from the engineers include:

For the most part, the author demonstrated a sound understanding of engineering principles and how they relate to aircraft design.

The author was creative in using technologies currently in development.

Excellent essay presenting an extensive investigation into a possible future personal air transportation vehicle.

This is a very creative essay which is solidly based on aero physics and reasonable power technology.
