Annual Oratorical Competition

The annual Oratorical Competition (known as ‘The Gavel’) hosted by TPJC and judged by Toastmasters International is a prestigious event that brings together close to 40 public speakers from all junior colleges to pit their wits and words against one another.

An intense and guelling affair, the tournament (this year on 31 May 2008) comprised two rounds; the first of which involved presenting a 2 minute speech after a 5 minute preparatory period and the second involved delivering a 2 minute speech with no preparatory time at all.

Representing the school were Grace Lim (1AD1) and Robindro Chatterji (2SC1). Both did very well in the first round to make it into the finals on the same day.

In the end, Robindro did exceptionally well, beating all competitors to be declared champion of the tournament.

Both our public speakers would like to thank our supportive teachers-in-charge (Madam Low Chiew Sim, Mrs Jai Singh, Mr Ngoei Wen-Qing) from the Oratorical and Debating Society, as well as our loyal alumni Ms Leigh-Anne Choo and Ms Judith Jacob for their invaluable guidance. Without them, this victory would not have been possible. Both Grace and Robindro would also like to thank God for blessing them abundantly and preserving their health and voices.
