2010 GCE 'A' Level Highlights of Results
On 4 March 2011, ACJC saw the release of the GCE A-Level results for the 2010 batch of graduates. This is the 4th cohort taking the revised curriculum where all candidates offer at least 7 subjects comprising 3 H2 and 1 H1 content-based subjects of which at least one must be a contrasting subject, H1 General Paper (GP), or H2 Knowledge and Inquiry (KI), Project Work (PW) and H1 Mother Tongue Language.
A -Level Subjects
ACJC is proud to announce that the class of 2010 has outperformed the previous 3 cohorts under the revised curriculum and have thus set another new benchmark for the years to come, living out our motto of The Best Is Yet To Be.
Based on the MOE indicator of “percentage of candidates obtaining at least 3 H2 passes, with a pass in GP or KI”, 95.8% of our 830 students achieved this, surpassing the national standard of 90.8%.
There is also an improvement in the quality of performance with 23.1% of students obtaining 3 distinctions or more for their H2 subjects, a steady improvement from 22.3% for 2009 and 21.8% for 2008.
General Paper/ Knowledge & Inquiry
The College has done consistently well for GP and this year is no exception. The cohort also did extremely well in comparison with the national average for the quality of grades. We obtained 98.1% Passes for GP, exceeding the national average of 93.9%. The 27.7% of Distinctions for GP is also above the national average of 21.2%. All our students passed Knowledge & Inquiry with 40% of them obtaining Distinctions. Our inaugural batch of students taking the English Language & Linguistics subject obtained 100% Passes with 37.5% of them scoring Distinctions.
H1/H2/H3 Subjects
The good results were mirrored in the other subjects as well. Of the subjects offered at the H2 level, 11 subjects obtained 100% passes. 15 of the 17 H2 subjects had percentage passes at or above the national average while 10 H2 subjects had percentage distinctions above the national average.
Out of the 11 subjects offered at H1 level, 8 subjects had percentage passes at or above national average while 9 H1 subjects had percentage distinctions at or above the national average.
The students who offered H3 subjects had also performed well at the A-level examination. H3 subjects are only offered to the brightest students in Singapore. Of the 16 subjects offered at H3 level, 14 subjects had percentage passes at or above the national average, and 6 subjects had percentage distinctions at or above the national average.
Students
The 2010 cohort performed extremely well at the GCE-A Level Examination with 4 students obtaining 8 distinctions. This is double in number as compared to 2009. In addition, there are a total of 8 students with 7 distinctions, 51 students with 6 distinctions, 53 students with 5 distinctions, 62 with 4 distinctions and 14 students with 3 distinctions. In total there are 192 students with at least 3 H2 distinctions.

Hoa Min Hui Lyria Jan Yap Ming Shan
The top ACJC student and the top science student is Hoa Min Hui Lyria. Lyria achieved 8 distinctions in H3 Biology, H2 Biology, Chemistry, Knowledge and Inquiry, Mathematics, H1 English Literature, Chinese Language and Project Work. In addition to her academic work, Lyria was very involved in college life. She participated in the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Challenge and the Chemistry Olympiad. She was also selected for the Nanyang Research Programme (NRP) in 2009 and earned a Merit award for her research project. She was also a member of the college’s Odyssey of the Mind teams in 2009 and 2010.
The top student in the Arts Faculty is Jan Yap Ming Shan. Jan achieved distinctions in H3 History, H2 History, Economics, Mathematics, H1 General Paper, China Studies in English and Project Work. She had obtained a distinction in Higher Chinese during her O levels. Jan was a member of the Harp Ensemble and was a peer tutor for history under the Arts Council Peer Mentorship programme.
The other 2 students who obtained 8 distinctions are Yip Chi Jie Matthew and Anthony Wijaya. Matthew achieved distinctions in H3 Chemistry, H2 Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, H1 General Paper, Project Work, Economics and Chinese Language. Anthony achieved distinctions in H3 SMU Game Theory & Competitions, H2 Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, H1 General Paper, Project Work, and HIGHER Malay Language taken at O Level Examinations (2008).
Another first for ACJC in recent years is that Jonathan Fheng was awarded the Institute of Physics Singapore (IPS) A-level Medal for being one of the top Physics students with the best scores at the A-level exams. Jonathan obtained 5 distinctions at the A-levels.
