booth@yog olympic village

Over three days from 20-22 August 2010, six students from ACJC, together with their counterparts from ACS(Barker Road), hosted the Australia booth in the Youth Olympic Village. They helped showcase Australian Culture, Nature and Architecture and interacted with the athletes and officials from the participating countries. The highlights at our booth included cuddly Koala, Kangaroo, Echidna and Platypus soft toys, fun puzzles, a wooden model of the Sydney Opera House and temporary Australian flag tattoos.

Hong Anping (1SA6), Nhor Sharafina (1SD2), Elvira Tan (1SA1), Mariko Nuraidah (1SD1), Olivia Lautner (1SD1, not pictured) and Elgyn Lau (1AH, not pictured) gave visitors like Italian gymnast Carlotta Ferlito and her coach (pictured) a warm welcome to Singapore. It was a wonderful experience enjoying the buzz in the Village for hosts and visitors alike.

ac dance@yog Judo competition

15 of our talented dancers from the AC Dance Society have performed during the YOG Judo competition at the Singapore International Convention Centre on 21st August. The dance entitled, Sakura, which draws inspiration from Japan and choreographed by our own students has awed the audience at the Suntec hall with their amazing graceful moves that complemented the art of judo. The dance received media attention and two of our dancers were interviewed.

Blazing the Trail

Broadcast to an international audience, the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony opened a new chapter in the history of the Olympic movement. ACSian Theatre proudly represented Singapore by performing during the opening ceremony.

Putting on a vibrant and aesthetic display, the 27 performers formed part of the Peranakan contingent during the 'Welcome' segment. The dancers, dressed in elegant cultural costumes, danced energetically to the song 'Rasa Sayang' which was followed by a short Hip-Hop choreography before forming the letter ‘C’ of the word 'Welcome'. It was an amazing experience, walking through the reflective pool on the Floating Platform@Marina Bay during the finale when the President of Singapore declared the world’s first Youth Olympic Games open.

The directors saved the best for the last during the cauldron-lighting ceremony. Our performers were honoured with the exclusive roles as ushers, cheering the Olympic torchbearers as they ran the last stretch of the torch relay before lighting the cauldron.

Together with all the other dedicated performers involved in the impressive show, ACSian Theatre has created history by its participation in this grand event. ACSian Theatre would like to thank all the spectators who  made the night truly unforgettable, the college for supporting and believing in us throughout and finally, Main Wayang, for giving us the opportunity of performing at the Opening Ceremony.

ACJC Welcomes the Australian Youth Olympic Team to Singapore

On 13th August 2010, ACJC students from the Swimming, Track and Field, Hockey, Tennis, Cross-Country and Squash Teams gathered at ACS (Barker Road) to welcome the Australian Youth Olympic Team to Singapore.  Together with two Australian Schools as well as students from ACS (Barker Road) and ACS (Primary), our student athletes gave a warm welcome to our twinned country Australia.  Held in the Tan Chin Tuan Sports Hall, about 120 ACJC students had the opportunity to mingle and interact with the Youth Olympians from Australia. Also present were our ACJC Youth Olympians, Chloe Chan, Arren Quek and Joanna Chan.

It was truly a memorable moment for all students as they were able to pose for photographs and speak to the athletes, sharing a common bond through sport.

 yog torch bearers

The Olympic flame finally made its way from Athens, Greece, to Dover  Road, Singapore on 12th August 2010. Two ACJC students,  Nicholas Seah (1SD6) and Janelle Tan (1SA8) had the honour of being  part of the 524 students selected for the Torch Relay.  As they carried the  torch along the Dover Road stretch, our two ACSians made history for the College as we draw near to the opening of the Youth Olympic Games. There were crowds of supporters lining in anticipation, awaiting the arrival of  the flame and cheering on the torch bearers. For Nicholas, it was indeed a special moment when he  passed the flame to fellow Torch Bearer Janelle, who carried the  flame for another stretch before passing the torch on. The Torch Relay will continue to make its way  around Singapore, leading up to the Opening Ceremony this weekend.

Motif designed by Jane Hartono

Along the Olympic Walk, which is down at the Marina Promenade, 204 trees will be planted, one for each of the 204 participating National Olympic Councils (NOC). On the plaque commemorating the tree dedicated to Australia, our Twinned NOC, is a motif designed by one of our JC2 students, Jane Marsha Hartono.

World Culture Village
At the heart of the Youth Olympic Village, there will be 59 booths showcasing the diverse peoples, cultures and countries participating in the Games. Six of our students will be on hand at the Australia booth, introducing Australian Culture, Nature, Architecture and Sport to the young athletes and visitors from around the world.

Volunteers
While the young athletes take centre stage during the Games, working hard behind the scenes will be thousands of volunteers, whose invaluable contributions will help ensure the smooth running of every event. Students from ACJC are part of this workforce as Accreditation Assistants, Podium Assistants and Spectator Services Officers.

Spectators
What better way to contribute to the Games and enjoy the outstanding performances than to be right there where the action is, cheering for not just our Singapore contingent, but for each and every youth athlete who has worked so hard to represent their respective nations at these Games!

ACJC students will be on hand at the various competition venues to show our support for Chloe, Joanna, Arren and Jacqueline, our ACJC representatives at the Games, the rest of the Singapore athletes, as well as the contingent from our Twinned National Olympic Council, Australia. The ACSian spirit will shine bright wherever the Red, Blue and Gold are in the stands.
