While the other JC2 students were eagerly receiving their “A” level Mother-tongue result in college on 5th March 2010, five students - Karyn Lim, Julian Tan, Jessica Yu, Mivio Wong and Natelie Soh , were at the ACS (Independent) auditorium representing ACJC at the 2010 EDB Economics Short Film Competition Final. Other Finalists were River Valley High, Raffles Institution (JC), Saint Andrews Junior College and ACS(I).
After the screening of each film, the team had to go up to the stage for the Question and Answer Segment from the three judges. Our five member team came in a very commendable third position in the competition.
The team had to submit a short film on an Economic theme with a special focus on the Sports and Leisure industry. This is in relation to international competitions (World Cup/ Winter Olympics/ Youth Olympic Games) in 2010. The deadline for submission was 29 January 2010, which meant that the team had to work through the December holidays, doing research and coming up with the idea as well as drawing up the story line for the video clip.
According to the judges, all the videos were creative; some had exaggerated and inflated data and some were more innovative than others, some colleges scored very well in the Video entry segment and some scored more in the Q&A Segment.
Our team’s video “Externali-Steve”, a video on the externalities incurred by Singaporeans during the Singapore Formula One season, despite its simplicity, impressed the judges nevertheless. The research on the actual revenue earned from the F1 as well as the cost of organizing paid off.
The team of five students
Raffles Institution (JC) and River Valley High School’s entries were on market structures and competition. RI(JC)’s entry was very humourous, but RVHS’s creative video and more convincing answers at the Q&A session won them the second place. The overall winner was the team from ACS(I).
