Sustained Achievement Award for Sports

Anglo-Chinese Junior College provides a holistic education, striving for academic excellence and the development of the whole person. The teachers in the PE and CCA departments are committed to its vision, 'To establish ACJC as an institution for students to excel in both studies and CCA; in particular, to groom our student athletes to achieve peak performance and subsequently move on to represent Singapore and bring glory to the nation in the sporting arena'. As such, support systems are provided for these CCA to grow and scale greater heights. Regular meetings are arranged with teachers-in-charge to raise issues of concern, to meet challenges and to set targets and direction for the college sporting CCA. Strong administrative support is given to all CCA. The sports complex, which includes a standard Olympic size swimming pool, provides state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for our students to exercise regularly to keep fit and for our athletes to perform to the best that they can. There is constant review of our programmes and feedback is sought from teachers, students, parents, coaches, old boys and old girls. The needs of the individual sports are identified, and resources and expertise sought for the sport to excel.

Another factor that has contributed to the success is the school’s ability to work with its partners to enhance the quality of CCA in the school. In addition to the support from the Ministry and the college, parents and old boys and girls make a significant contribution to the success of sports in the college. Former athletes of the college teams come back frequently to boost the morale of the present teams. They contribute in coaching and give useful tips to their juniors so that they can succeed. Parents contribute and provide support in their own unique ways. Some sponsor competition attire while others host dinners to celebrate with the athletes after each success. The college has also gone regional; it has regular sports exchange programmes with schools from Korea, Japan, Australia and South Africa. The ACJC Sports Scholarships took off in 2000 with 6 sportsmen winning them. In 2001, 8 scholarships were awarded. In 2002, 6. In 2003, 7. In 2004, 6 and in 2005, 5. An ACJC Sports Award was also given out in 2004 and 2005. Together with the leadership camp for its sports captains, the college continually seeks ways to enhance the performance of its sportsmen.
